ASSEMBLY and LAPATHON 

Friday, 7th August will be a very busy day for Room 22. We have our Assembly item in the morning, followed by the Lapathon in the afternoon. The children should now be familiar with what they need to wear. We will be having a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, 5th August. The children will need to bring along their costume for the day in a plastic bag so that they can change. For the actual assembly on Friday, children can arrive to school in their costume and change into their school uniform after the assembly. It should be a wonderful event.

Our annual iRun for iPads will be on the same day. Any child who raises $10 or over will be able to choose a prize and the more money they raise, the better the prize they can choose. Parents are welcome to attend the event to support and cheer on your child(ren). The Lapathon will be conducted from 2.00pm.

PRINCIPAL'S VOLUNTEER READING PROGRAM

Thank you to Ms Robinson for helping out this term in Rm 22, with the volunteer reading program. The children have thoroughly enjoyed reading to you every morning and I have really appreciated your support with the program. If any other parent would like to be involved, please speak with the office to learn more about the program.

MATHEMATICS MADE FUN

For the first one, you have to choose the correct operation (+ - x or divide) to complete the sum.



This next game will require mental mathematics power. Luckily for you, you have been working hard during our Math Frenzy time in class. Have a go and see how well you do.

A PERFECT DAY FOR GARDENING
What a perfect day to get out in the garden with our buddy class, Room 23. We planted over 300 bulbs in the village green today and are looking forward to spring time when we will see the fruits of our labour. The children were surprised by how much mathematics is required in gardening. They had to consider the depth and distance apart for every bulb they planted. Some of the children continued on after lunch, helping out in the vegetable garden. The silver beet, kale, parsley, potatoes, cabbages and broccoli are coming along nicely and (hopefully) will be ready to harvest early next term. There seems to be a few green thumbs in Rm 22, which could come in handy for the gardens at home.

 

RAINFOREST PROJECT

It is a pleasure to see the hard work and determination that the students have put into their Rainforest Project. We are all looking forward to the oral presentations in Week 11. Well done, Room 22. Your hard work is paying off. Here is what a few students had to say about the project:
"The project was great for our learning. I learnt a lot about the rainforest as well as the green tree frog. Did you know that the rainforest dates back to the prehistoric times? (Which is a few years older than my Grandad!)" - Liam
"My chosen rainforest was the Amazon and I really enjoyed learning about it. I learnt many interesting facts about the Amazon. There are many animals that live in the Amazon such as the Poison Dart frog, the Pink River dolphin and the Jaguar. It was a great project." - Cameron
"The project was fun to complete but required a lot of work. I had a lot of fun working on the project and trying my best at all times. Something interesting that I would like to share is that there are many threats to the Amazon rainforest, such as logging, mining, rubbish/pollution, commercial fishing (in the Amazon river) and global warming. I hope one day the people of the world will come together and help save our rainforests." - Samuel

HALF A MILLION WORDS

How incredible! These two girls have read over half a million words so far this year on Literacy Pro. An outstanding effort. There are a number of children who are about to achieve this benchmark, so keep on reading. Well done.
"I think achieving half a million words is super cool. I am proud of the work that I have done. In our class, everyone has a goal and most children want to read as many words as they can. I am going for two million words before the end of the year. I know it is going to be hard work but I am willing to do it (plus, I love reading!)" - Aena

100,000 WORDS
It is a pleasure to see more students achieve over 100,000 words read this year. Well done to the students who have worked hard to reach this benchmark. Keep up the excellent effort and keep reading.
"I love reading! Literacy Pro is a great program and it motivates me to read more. I am very proud of myself for achieving 100,000 words so far this term. I have made a goal to get to the half a million club and then hopefully (before the end of the year) read over a million words. Wish me luck!" - Kallaghn

ART
Term 2 has been a busy term in the Art room. The children have completed many pieces of work, from stars, to rainforest scenes and even larger scale productions like the one you can see in the photo below. Here is what some of the students have to say about Art:
"I love going to Art. This term we have done loads of fun things like painting the Endeavour, creating a rainforest collage, and working on many skills."  - Aaryan
"Art has been great this term. We have had lots of good art sessions where we have been painting, drawing and learning many skills. My favourite thing this term has been painting the Endeavour and learning how the Primary and Secondary colours work." - Tyriq


 

Rainforest Project

The Rainforest Project is due in only a couple of weeks (Wednesday 24th June). It is essential that all students are now working extremely hard on their research and compiling their project together. There are three parts to the project: a report on the rainforest of their choice (e.g. Amazon), an animal report (e.g. Red belly piranha) and an oral presentation of what they have learnt.
In order for the children to focus on the task at hand, for the rest of the term I have put a stop to our homework book. Children will still have spelling words for Week 8, followed by the Principal's Challenge study for the rest of the term. Hopefully this will help the children manage their time more effectively.

LITERACY PRO
In Room 22, we know the importance of reading every night. Every student takes home a 'home reader' that is linked with a Literacy Pro quiz. Furthermore, every fortnight the children exchange their books at the library and choose at least one fiction and one non-fiction book. They are encouraged to choose a book within their lexile range and once completed, they can do a quiz on Literacy Pro. I have been amazed to see the progress already this term. So far, as a class, we have read over 2,300,000 words. Our goal is to get to 5,000,000 words by next term. There are a number of children who have really excelled, reading over 100,000 words already.

It is important to remember to complete the book before doing the quiz. The pass rate is 7 out of 10 (or 70%). It is best if the children can have the book with them when doing the quiz so that they can refer to the text. Everyone should be completing two to three quizzes per week.

MUSIC
The children are learning how to make music with a number of different instruments and create lyrics to go with the beat. 

Mothers Day 

The children had a great deal of fun making their mum a special gift and card. A great deal of thought and care went into both. I hope you all had a wonderful day. Here is what some of the children had to say about the two activities:
"First of all, we made the card. Using Microsoft Publisher we had to choose a greeting card template. We then deleted all of the images and searched for our own. It was fun to learn how to make a card." - Samuel

"Making the pot was fun. We got together with our buddies and planned our design. After that, we were given our pot, tiles and gem stones. Using a hot glue gun we placed all of the tiles on the flower pot. Once that was done, we put soil in it and chose a plant." - Brooklyn
