SUPER SCIENTIST COMPETITION - TERM 4

The second 'Super Scientist' competition will be taking place over the first few weeks of Term 4.

This competition has 3 stages:

Stage 1: Each student will research and present either a short science experiment or report on a science related concept, to our class. The students in our class will then select their top two 'Super Scientists'.

Stage 2: The selected two students will then have to present (again) to ALL the students and teachers in Year 5. An admin representative will will then choose their year group's #1 scientist!

Stage 3: Finally, the school will celebrate our top 6 scientists by getting them to present their report or experiment to the entire school, at a giant Science assembly! There will be prizes awarded to all students who made it through each stage of the process.

The Presentation:
·                     Can be a report or an experiment
·                     Can be a maximum of 5 minutes in length
·                     Students can use ICT resources such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word (or similar) to support their presentation
·                     Posters and charts are also an option to assist their presentations
·                     Experiments should be simple to set up, demonstrate the outcome within the time limit, and be safe!
·                     Students will need to explain what they are demonstrating, what procedure they are following, the aim, hypothesis (prediction), materials and of course, the results. Careful consideration should be made to how something happened and why. Some of the children may even think about the real world applications of their science if it applies.

There are many websites that can help assist in finding ideas on what to present. These have been listed below.

Important Information: Children will need to commit to a topic by Wednesday of Week 1: 12th October. A great deal of assistance will be required from home for this project. Our ICT sessions on Monday will be dedicated to project time, along with a couple of hours throughout Weeks 1 and 2, however, much of the work will need to be completed at home.
Due Date:  All experiments/reports will be presented in Week 2.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the presentations in Week 2 and I can't wait to learn more about all things science.

MISSING BOOKS

Unfortunately, we are missing close to 60 home readers in our room. The deadline to bring all of the books in is actually today, however, it is rather disappointing that we still have such a large amount of books unaccounted for. Reading is very important and I love the fact that the children in Room 17 read so much. This will always be encouraged but it is also important to return the books to the class so other children can enjoy reading too. I would really appreciate it if everyone could have a big look around their home, car, bedroom etc for class books and return them to school before we break up for the holidays. Thank you in advance for your help with this matter.

COOKING UP A STORM

We had a great time today cooking ‘Chocolate Molten Puddings’ as a little reward for the hard work that the children have put in throughout the term. Thank you to Mrs Stanley for supplying all of the ingredients and materials, as well as taking the role of head chef. It was a great learning experience for the children. MERIT CERTIFICATES

Congratulations to the students who received a Merit Certificate at today's assembly. Your hard work, help and kindness does not go unnoticed. Keep up the wonderful effort.

CYBER SAFETY

On Tuesday, we learnt about the importance of surfing the web safely. The children we taught about some of the dangers that they may come in contact with whilst being online, and strategies/skills to employ to make sure they are cyber-smart and safe. It was a very informative session and I'm sure that the parents who attended the evening seminar got a great deal of information out of it. Please take the time to reiterate to your child(ren) the measures they can take to be safe online. If you would like anymore information on this topic, you can browse Paul Litherland's website here:

BOOK REVIEW

As part of our Book Week activities, Room 17 have completed a number of different tasks in order to make a paper bag book review of their all time favourite book. We are seeing some spectacular work being produced. Here is a little snippet of Room 17's reviews.

Furthermore, Roshini would like to share her review of Roald Dahl's novel, George's Marvellous Medicine.

George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl

I have to say it! George’s Marvellous Medicine is just that: Marvellous! It is packed full with action and humour. When I read the book, it made me want to read it again because it was interesting, funny and extraordinary. My favourite part was when George gave the mysterious medicine he made to his Grandma. Suddenly, his grizzly and grouchy Grandma popped through the roof and was sooo tall. I loved the book because it was funny and mischievous (and everything a child loves!) I dare you to read this amazing Roald Dahl book. When I think about it, I can honestly say I was captivated. Once more, I am certain you’ll be captivated too, so I urge you to read this novel. It’s a must! So come on everyone, read George’s Marvellous Medicine. I’ll give it 5 out of 5 stars.

ASSEMBLY

The Year 5's did a superb job when they presented their Assembly Item to the school. We sang "Reach for the Top" which was the Olympic theme song for 2016. The song was full of inspiring messages and goal setting. Well done to all of the students, you did a wonderful job.

Congratulations to our Merit Certificate recipients. Keep up the great work.

Or Values and Science award recipients.

A great effort by our Literacy Pro award winners. You are superstars!

MASSED CHOIR

The Massed Choir festival was held on Tuesday, 30th August at the University of W.A. where 39 of our senior school choir students performed on stage with a number of other schools. It was a wonderful show and an amazing effort by all students. Well done to everyone who was involved.

WATTLE DAY WALK

Thursday, 1st September is not only the first day of Spring but it is also Wattle Day. To celebrate, Room 17 teamed up with their buddies (the Year 1's) to make Wattle Day cards, 123 in fact. We then headed out into our neighbourhood to deliver these cards.

SPORTS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all of the children who participated and gave 110% on our sports day. It was great to see sportsmanship, collaboration and leadership amongst the children. The final leader-board was: 4th place - Red, 3rd place Orange, 2nd place Blue and in first place... Purple! A great effort by all and congratulations to Purple faction. There will be more photos to come.

THE OLYMPICS: AROUND THE WORLD

Our Olympics: Around the World Project has begun therefore, Motivational Work for Week 7 and 8 will be on hold whilst the children are completing the activities for this project. Spelling and nightly reading activities will still continue until the end of term. Ideally, students should be doing a little bit of the project every night and sticking to their timetable.
To help you out, Miss List has created a website where you can access the project along with resources and ideas. You can find the link here: Olympics Project

Happy researching.

OUR CANTEEN NEEDS YOU

Canteen volunteer levels are at critical level and there is currently the risk of closing down the canteen. There have been days where the canteen has been staffed by one or two people to cater for the hundreds of children who order their food through the canteen on Wednesday and Thursday. Volunteering for your school in any way, shape or form really does make all the difference. If you can make the time to volunteer, please sign the sheet on our classroom door or see Suzette. You'll be able to find her in the canteen or around the school. Hopefully, with your support, our canteen can survive.

REACH FOR THE TOP

Room 17, are you ready for our assembly item?
Make sure you listen and learn the words to the song. You should all have the lyrics so now is the time to memorise the tune and the words, ready for next week. Go for gold!

NAIDOC INCURSION

The NAIDOC incursion, held in Week 3 of this term, was a hit with the children from Room 17. We participated in some story telling activities and learnt about the importance of totems in the Noongar custom. The children found out about how every little creature, plant and animal plays a pivotal role in the environment and the reason why we must care for all creatures, great and small. The incursion was wrapped up with a dance about the 'Willy Wagtail.'

"I learnt that the dots on the hand resemble friendships for life. We each put dots on our friend's hands. It was a nice activity and good to learn about." - Kya

"Did you know that the sparkle in your eye represents the stars in our Milky Way. We have the sparkle in our eye to remind us that there are totems in this world (like the frog, birds, trees and insects) that we need to care for. Everyone has a different totem." - Mitchell.

WELCOME MISS LIST

Hi all,

My name is Jessie List and I’m a 4th year prac student from the University of Notre Dame who will be in Room 17 for the remainder of the term.

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know each student in the class and am looking forward to learning more about them.  I’m also thrilled to have the opportunity to teach the students throughout the term.

I am incredibly excited to be a part of all the wonderful events that are taking place at the school and in class this term and I’m very fortunate to have been placed in a wonderful school like Wattle Grove.

I look forward to meeting you all and have a lovely week!
